Terrorism. Terror. Two words appearing more often in our society today. What do they really mean? What is really so frightening about terrorism? And perhaps more importantly, what is the effect of terrorism on our tiny little country? Students of the Eindhoven Design Academy, Faculty of Man and Communication, have worked on a project about the representation of terrorism, under the guidance of designer and teacher Annelys de Vet, and in collaboration with Freek Lomme, director of Eindhoven based presentation-institution and publishing company Onomatopee.
The resulting book shares, through beautiful pictures and designs, the students’ views on modern society’s grappling with the term terrorism, as they ask questions as diverse as “Who or what is terrorizing your life?”, “How does a terrorist-type face look?”, and “How can terrorism be sold as a product?” Also included is a preface by Max Bruinsma. The publication ‘Jurkjes & Jason’ is a publication by Onomatopee and was realized at the Design Academy Eindhoven, department of Man & Communication.
Reason for this publication was the question by Annelys de Vet, designer and teacher, to give a personal opinion on the way terrorism is being represented in the media nowadays. This resulted not only in 27 unique issues that were presented at the Onomatopee gallery space in June 2008, but also in this publication in which every student gives his/her own view on this subject by means of a spread. The entire project has also been made possible with the help of the municipality of Eindhoven/Pokon.
