The name of the project symbolizes the common errors when switching to a foreign keyboard letters. We often change by mistake the Z with Y while typing. The title has also the English abbreviation DIY which means - do it yourself. DIYAJN project is critically mapping tragicomic amateur graphic design solutions and advertising. I created a webpage that presents my research that shows what I have found - horrible designs that are around as, that we come to contact daily but unconsciously overlook.
The page is divided into thematic categories such as grammar, which highlights the ignorance of basic rules of spelling. Ads that contain aesthetically imperfect implementations or folk art which showcases amateur graphic design solutions. Since the page relies on the supply of new "catch" from site visitors, the database will be complemented by the principle of a blog. Gallery can be also cemented. Under each photo there is a link to download images in form of a card, which ti ready for printing and thus allows to express our opinion on various graphic issues through correspondence. Postcards can be sent either as a warning or entertainment.
My goal is not to criticize the authors, but give the opportunity to express an opinion on the aesthetic sensibilities of people with different taste. I'm concerned about creating a place - even if only virtual, where we can accumulate such visual trash that surround us. To tell a story about what is happening around us. This page is intended for a broad range of people from graphic designers, clients to all the people interested in visual communication.
The project was created during the course Critic – Critical practice in Graphic Design at Department of Visual Communication at Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. The course foucuses on practicing and developing individual or collaborative critical projects.
